What is cbt?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that has been proven to help treat a wide range of conditions. CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this effects how we act. Our actions can affect how we think and feel. It is an effective treatment for a range of common mental health problems and is recommended by NICE guidance.

CBT focusses on how you think and how you act and noting how past events have shaped your thinking and behaviours.  We will work together to help you make the changes that will help you to feel better. CBT deals with current problems and looks for practical solutions to improve the your state of mind.

CBT looks to help you make sense of what can feel like an overwhelming problem, by breaking it down into more manageable parts. This makes it easier to see how they are connected and how they affect the you. These smaller parts are your thoughts, feelings, behaviours and even physical sensations. These elements are connected together and can often result in being trapped in a negative cycle. CBT aims to show you other ways of thinking and acting to help you break out of the negative cycle.

It is easy to get trapped into a negative cycle, but changing the way you think and behave can have a significant positive impact on you. You will learn to recognise your thoughts, behaviours and feelings while learning other, potentially more helpful ways of thinking and behaving.

Above is a diagram which shows the CBT model of emotion, this explains that how we feel emotionally is impacted by how we think and how we behave. We will use this model in our sessions to help understand what emotional difficulty you are experiencing in order to find a way to break this cycle and make positive changes.

FAQ

Does CBT work?

There has been a great deal of research into CBT and its effectiveness and has been carefully reviewed by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). CBT is recommended by NICE for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

What should I expect from therapy sessions?

I deliver CBT individually either face to face or remotely (telephone or video conferencing). I deliver therapy in a confidential, safe environment. The number of sessions depends on the difficulty you will need help with and this will be discussed with you following the assessment session. Often this will be between 6 and 20 sessions, lasting approximately 50 mins each.

We will discuss your difficulties and together set goals for you to achieve from the sessions. CBT is not a quick fix, it does involve hard work between sessions. I do not tell people what to do, instead I will help and support you to decide what difficulties you want to work on in order to improve how you are feeling.
